Sponsor guidance: eVisas and right-to-work records
The August 2026 sponsor guidance reflects the move to eVisas. Employers still need the appropriate right-to-work checks and supporting records.

Use the current guidance
UKVI published version 08/26 of its sponsor guidance, Part 2, on 3 August 2026. The changes include updated explanations of eVisa evidence following the end of visa sticker issuance.
A successful application email or letter is not itself proof of immigration status for a right-to-work check. For a sponsored worker with an eVisa, the guidance requires an online check through the Home Office service before employment begins.
Keep the process consistent
Review your onboarding checklist against the official guidance and retain the required evidence of the check. The appropriate method depends on the person's evidence: British and Irish citizens cannot obtain an online right-to-work share code and have different checking options.
Apply checks fairly and avoid assumptions based on nationality or appearance. Keep records in line with data-protection requirements. The GOV.UK employer page explains follow-up checks and what to do when someone cannot show their documents or online status.
These are general process reminders. Read the complete sponsor guidance, including the other parts and appendices it identifies. Individual immigration questions should be taken to an appropriately authorised adviser.
